Merry Merry Month of May

Well, I suppose I shall just have to do a rough draft, as May is over soon, and I have ony gotten Mayday done.
I'll post some pictures of some of the interesting things we have done, and give a brief description, or not.
We have done quite a bit this month, as the weather has been nice, and we love being outside.
This first picture is just a little hike we went on, it's a park pretty close by, but it is really lovely, it looks like you are in the middle of the woods. It's called Miller Park. This scene is actually part of a clearing, not so wooded.

Sliding down hills, or rolling down them, is a favorite pass time around here.

We went to Eccles Dinosaur Park in Ogden with the Utah Unschoolers group. It's always nice to hang out with them, as they all believe and practice respectful parenting. I don't feel as if I need to make my child behave in a certain manner or fear being judged. It's always a nice time visiting with them. We get free entry into the park with our membershilp to Red Butte garden. I am sure we will be visiting relatively often this summer, although it takes almost half a tank of gas to get there and back. It's really a great place for a little boy who loves dinosaurs, they have a museum that isn't too detailed, just right for my little ones, and a pretty large area walkway with lots of different kinds of dinosaurs. Also a playground, picnic areas, and above the museum is our favorite - a young tyrannasaurus rex trying to get at a mother triceratops' young ones. They are robotic, and the animation is quite good, they make noise and stomp their feet, shuffle around and throw back their heads. We really like it.

Let's see, what else?
Oh! We went to Red Butte Garden with Daddy this last Sunday, had a picnic and tromped around for a while.
It is a lovely garden, pretty extensive, up above the landscaped areas are hikes, up Red Butte Canyon. We went up just a little way, we had the stroller, so didn't go too far. We'll go back again soon, and do some real exploring. The theme this year is dinosaurs, so there are a few statues scattered throughout, so of course we like that. I need to take pictures of the plants I like next time I go, so I can figure out what is
missing from my garden, they have a culinary, herb, and medicinal garden. I would like to take my field guides into the natural settings, too, and figure out what some of the trees and plants are. After we got done at Red Butte we went to the Living Traditions festival, it's an annual thing locally. We didn't get there til past six, we ate, then things started shutting down. But Trev got to do a little more exploring. He always wants to climb trees, but usually it's an inopportune time, such as when he is barefoot, or when the first branch is 10 feet up, like our trees. Maybe this next week we'll go to Sugarhouse park specifically to climb trees, they have one by the playground that is pretty child friendly. Sure to be a good time.

Trevelyn has started teaching himself to read. This month he is really experimenting with letters and their sounds, and is starting to add sounds together. He can blend two letters together beatifully, he sometimes needs help with a third sound. We practice at the fridge,
where our magnet letters are. I of course am thrilled that I won't have to fuss over it, and worry about it until he is fifteen. Relieved, really. I just have to remember to strew our house and lives with interesting things, and let nature take its course.

Happy exploring!
