(We'll update the photos in a few days when we have hair.)
You only need socks, burlap, or some other loosely woven cloth, some sort of grass seed, a rubberband or twist tie, buttons, pins, and soil.
Open your sock or material over the rim of a mug, and put in the seeds.
Next add your soil, pushing it in firmly.

Twist the opening to tighten, lifting it out of your mug, and tie it with the rubberband or the twisty.
Trim off the excess material
and water thoroughly.
Turn it over, and shape your creature how you like, and add your eyes and nose.

Keep it on a saucer or plate with water in the dish so that your seedlings won't dry out.

Soon you'll have hair!

This craft idea comes from Usborne Big Book of Things to Do.

Stumble It!

These are totally getting added to my summer craft list for the Club kids!!! I just had a friend donate an entire grocery bag full of old socks---EXCITING!
I can't wait to see them!
Those are SO stinkin' cute! We might have to make some of those. Would threadbare socks work?
Jenn - Awesome!
Joy - I'm sure they'd work best!
Neat Idea!
It will be fun to watch the heads grow.

Adorable! I've done it with nylons but never socks or burlap. I've got some burlap but haven't felt inspired-now I know what to do with it!
These are so fun! I know Owen would enjoy making some.
They look so cute! Great idea.
Those are great! We made one at a fall festival and the grass is still growing. Our's was made with panty hose and a glued on face (that has since fallen off). I love the idea of using socks and sewn on buttons - so cute!
Oh I have been meaning to make some of these guys in ages...i believe you have inspired me that bit further to get to making them.
Take care...xx
Hey! I have a question for you -- how do you plan your crafty/sciency/etc activities for the kids? Is it just day by day, or do you plan your week out...?
Those are sweet!!! I have some old socks that would be perfect for that!
Crunchy Christian Mom -
[grin] Plans don't work so hot at our house.
I just keep things in mind, and when it feels like a good time for something, I run it past the babes. If they're up for it, we do it.
If I'm up for it (such as an experiment), and one/they are not, I'll do it, and sometimes they'll join in or I'll holler "Hey, come check this out!, it's so cool!"
:)
That's about it.
I never get tired of "Magic School Bus" (I am almost 35!)
I LOVE USborne.
The museum looks FANTASTIC! If you are ever in the area I suspect your gang would love the Wyoming Dinosaur Center outside Thermopolis.
Great photos, as always!
Putting Grass Heads on our list!
