june 5th: business

Not busy-ness, but plain old business.
Takin' care of business.

Today that looked like

A family discussion regarding what to do about our little friend.
We considered finding a family of ducks to ask them to adopt him/her.
We tried to call the DWR (no office on Fridays)
we considered getting another baby so's ours won't be lonely...
And in the end we named her/him.
Peep. Imagine that.

We went to a couple of markets.

And to pick up a couple of final plants for the garden.

We sailed Peep into our pond (the real pond, not the pool this time)... with the invitation to eat mosquito larvae and bugs and anything else he could stir up.

We buried our other two little friends.

We introduced Peep to a clover patch.

One of us sat with a cup of Throat Soother's Tea in her prettiest china cup and perused one of her bibles... Judes Herbal Home Remedies.
(Let me say here that I'm so looking forward to making lots of wonderful concoctions of things from the herbs in the medicine garden!
But right now my throat just is so sore.)

We dug some questionable things (you know how I feel about bloated, right?) from the bottom of the pond and offered them to little Peep.
Schlep. That duck loves worms. I'll pay him if he grows to love snails.

We made another syrup for the hummingbird feeder.
It's so lovely to see so many visitors each day.

We've done research.
We've made plans (and have gotten our colors) to dye more wool over the next couple of days

and to make beads out of rose petals.

We've started dinner

and one of us is looking forward to long evening hours with her nose in a novel
and movies for the other two
oh - and Daddy coming home, eventually...

Not a very exciting day (nor very blog-worthy), but all things that must needs be done, and we're settled and feeling quite The Thing again.

All is well.

  1. I can't wait to see how you do the rose petal beads, we are making them as well; haven't decided which method to use yet.

    Peep is just the cuteset!

    Get better!

  3. Peep is looking robust and fuzzy, paddling about in your little pond.

I'm not sure if you are the imbibing type but some whiskey with a bit of Grand Marnier on top will stop your throat from hurting.

What can I say, I was a bartender and worked in restaurants for years. It works!!

  6. I chuckled when I read you named your friend Peep. How perfect!

A few times ago when one of us came down with a sore throat, we made a concoction that seemed to help (supposedly some old Amish remedy), but all I can remember that was in it was honey and really(really) hot pepper. And maybe vinegar, too. Haven't made that one in awhile but it worked. (Just burned everything right out of your throat :)) If I can find the recipe in my box I'll let you know.

  7. My granddad made us gargle with salt water when we had sore throats... we do it now and it usually helps.

Also just wanted to let you know that I love the way I feel when I am reading about your days... you inspire me in such a peaceful, gentle way, as I know you do others too. So I want to share an award with you that celebrates just this, the sharing of your spirit with others. You can share it with someone you feel generates these desires for you, or you can keep it quietly... no pressure, just wanted you to know that you are appreciated.
    Blessings and magic.

  8. Just catching up here! Peep! PEEP! He is adorable, and I have a good feeling he will alright. If you want to cheat and give him some foods that are enriched just to build him up a bit, you can get chick starter. I am sorry about his siblings, harsh world sometimes. Aw, Peep!

  9. Peep is so adorable! I recently raised a batch of ducks, they are so much fun aside from their icky puddle poops. Do you have a heat lamp for him? Ducklings should be at 90 degrees for the first week, and slowly lowered each week after. Maybe you already know all this, but I thought I'd say so just in case! They can only swim for about 15 minutes before they need to go warm up and nap, or they will get tired/weak and drown! The strange thing they do with their necks when they look like the are drunk is usually just what happens when they are about to die. One of my Pekins did that after having heat stroke. :-(

I very much enjoy reading your blog and seeing the gentle rhythm of your days! And your craft ideas are wonderful, I can't wait to try the flowers pressed on linen.
