We’ve recently added New Cadoo to our stash of games.
While it’s a great game, it’s a bit beyond our family at times, as Maddie doesn’t read, and Trev doesn’t always like to follow a certain format (ie – sometimes you want to ‘act out’ something that requires ‘drawing’).
It occurred to me today that we could borrow a few of the ideas, adapt the game to make it totally non-competitive, and still have a game that was challenging, fun, and that channeled our brains into Think! and Create! modes.
So we each came up with as many words/actions/nouns as we wished,
wrote the word/action on a piece of paper,
then cut them out into small strips.
We put them into a bag,
and we had our game!
We grabbed some playdough, a pencil and a piece of paper, made sure our imaginations were firmly in tow, and began our game.
Each of us decided upon reading our word if we would like to act out, draw, or sculpt our word/action,
the ones we drew during our game today (though there are more that weren’t chosen) were:
shoe
flower
truck
Annabelle (our dog)
Super Mario Brothers
Madeleine
lamp
Love You
cantaloupe
dominoes
birds
tire
window
hill
fish
hammer
rock
pan
clouds
knob
mountain
giraffe
Me
We put our drawn and read tabs into a small cup to ensure that they weren’t lying about for anyone to inadvertently read, thus spoiling the round.
I was really satisfied with this game, as my children had to think about not only what was easiest for they themselves to most easily communicate, but what the others would most likely understand.
You could put challenges on this game such as time limits (an electronic or sand timer) and so forth, but that wasn’t necessary to us.
We all chose words to add to the bag, to make sure that some of our favorites would be included.
The children and I enjoyed the game for quite a long time, and I’m sure we’ll play it more in the future!
