Nomad Press has tons of really fun and interesting books, and has given us an extra copy of FOOD : 25 Amazing Projects to give away to someone else.
From the publisher, we have:
From the minute life begins, you’ve got to have some kind of food to make you strong, help you grow, and give you energy. But a lot of times that ham sandwich is taken for granted—you don’t give a lot of thought to where it comes from, how it got to you, what’s really in it, or what it does for you.
Food 25 Amazing Projects Investigate the History and Science of What We Eat, gives kids some “food for thought” as they dive in to exciting projects and activities about the history, science, and culture of food. They’ll learn about how people in ancient times thought about food, and how they got it. They’ll find out how certain foods evolved, and how modern technology plays a part in food production, packaging, and delivery.
And they’ll learn about all aspects of food in our daily lives—how vegetarians balance their diet; how some cultures rose and fell based on a single food source; the route from farm to market; how eating locally makes an impact; and much more."
The chapters are named and listed as follows:
Chapter One: Picking the First Apple
Chapter Two: Farming, Past & Present
Chapter Three: Food & Cultures
Chapter Four: I Want It! Food In Demand
Chapter Five: Food Packaging
Chapter Six: Food Safety
Chapter Seven: Traditions & Celebrations
Chapter Eight: Food Across Time
Chapter Nine: Nutrition
Chapter Ten: "Meat" Me At the Veggie Stand
Chapter Eleven: Backyard Eating
Chapter Twelve: You're Eating What?!
Chapter Thirteen: The Future of Food
This has been a really fun book!
We still haven't done any of the projects - not because we're not interested, mostly just because we've been enjoying reading and wanted to get through quickly so we could get to the give-away.
But that doesn't mean we aren't interested--there are lots of recipes and things we plan to try over our wintery, kitchen months!
Even though, I'd say the book is work reading. There are lots of fun facts that we didn't know, as well as the address of modern sustainability and organic issues.
The age guide for this book is grade 4th-6th, ages 9-12 (but Maddie is five, and she will definitely be included in our readings of and experiments from this book!).
If you're interested in a copy, just leave a comment.
We'll close the drawing Wednesday, November 24, and I'll ship it to anyone who can read English print.
Entries are as follows:
- one entry for leaving a comment
- another entry if you are or become a follower
- an extra entry if you blog or tweet or post on facebook.
- You don't need to enter more than once - just say in your original entry whether you're a new or current follower, and if you have announced it elsewhere.
P.S. We'll start the next one, Explore Rocks and Minerals, on Friday, November 26, so be sure to enter for that if you're interested.
